Prominently located at Penn Quarter, Convene -Terrell Place, is a coworking and event space provider. Their first location in Washington, DC, Convene occupies three floors in this historic building. The space infuses Convene’s emphasis on hospitality with the local, residential vernacular of idyllic, DC rowhouses. The concept, “Formality. Undone.”, fuses the historic nature of Washington DC’s European roots with American modernity. References to Neoclassical architecture, such as grand scale and pure geometric forms, provide a framework for expansive gallery spaces—common areas designed for working, collaboration, and socialization. The space includes a full-service kitchen, chef’s demonstration tables, and two new, monumental stairs.
Deep green hues emphasize dramatic volumes, while black metal framework draws the eye upward and defines spaces within the galleries and common areas. The grand scale of the galleries is balanced by rich tones and warm materials to attract users and invite them to linger. Brass accents, original artwork, and custom millwork transform the large, open spaces into hospitality-centered environments on a human scale. A custom, fabricated skylight with circadian rhythm lighting runs the full extent of the basement amenity floor, creating a naturally welcoming environment, while planters equipped with grow lights support biophilia throughout. By incorporating the charmed romanticism and historical proportions of DC’s urban infrastructure, the space and culture of Convene - Terrell Place provides a boutique experience that evokes a sense of familiarity nestled in stately ambiance.
