Mortenson is a large national construction company based in Minnesota. In 2019, their DC Metro Area headquarters was relocated to Westpark Drive, Tysons Corner, Virginia. As part of change management, the client hired us to evaluate their needs for a more collaborative environment as well as understanding Mortenson forward approach in the construction industry.
By choosing a first-floor location, formerly designated as retail then converted to standard office space, we were able to recapture the full slab to slab height (15’-0”), fully expressing the architecture of the building and its floor to ceiling exterior windows.
Mortenson intended to feature their work throughout the space, not with images but through actual craftmanship and materials.
The space planning focused on 3 specific areas: the “client center” with a very urban, minimalist style, and 15-foot glass conference rooms; the “employee Hub” including a large communal pantry/café using warm and natural materials; and the “work zone” with outward facing glass walls and low partitions.
We had the opportunity to work with Mortenson as they were both the client and the contractor. This provided the opportunity to use the design to highlight their work, giving them an office that they are proud to bring potential clients and partners as an example of their work.
